vacation in umbria

My husband and I have spent many vacations in Italy but we always return to our favorite city of Lucca. I would like to expand out a bit and explore Umbria. I would like to find a town that is similar to Lucca, for example, lots of shops, lots of restaurants, big enough to explore but not as large and crowded as say Florence. Do you have any suggestions. On trip advisor I saw a review of Spoleto. The gentleman had been to Lucca and liked Spoleto better. Any help would be appreciated.

The only place we've spent any time at in Umbria was Orvieto, and we enjoyed it very much. It definitely had a small town feel, but we enjoyed our hotel and the restaurants we visited.

Check out Assisi or Spello. Don't think you'll be disappointed.

We spent two weeks in Spello and it was a perfect base to explore the area- Perugia, Montefalco, Bevagna. The one place in Umbria we did not care for was Spoleto..

@Suki what didn’t you like about Spoleto? We will be in an agriturismo outside of Spoleto for 5 nights in May but haven’t picked our daytrips yet. Looking at Spoleto, Assisi, Spello, Norcia, among others. (Will be doing Orvieto as a day trip from a long stay in Rome.)
