I've had several emails back and forth with the owner of an apartment I want to rent over the summer in Rome and just want to check that this is standard practice: she would like me to send a small deposit via paypal and then pay for the remainder in cash when I check in. If you've used VRBO, what has been your experience?

Have used vrbo and homeaway for vacation rentals in Italy and Ireland. Paying deposit through paypal is very safe. I've had owners request the final payment in cash on several occasions. They supply you with a receipt upon payment.
