Using US GSM phone

I'm almost certain this has been discussed but I have a quad-band phone and have added Intl. calling to my plan to reduce the per minute charge.

My question is since it is a US number and I am roaming - when I make a call to an Italian number do I dial 011 - 39 - LN and when I dial the US do I dial 00 - 1 - AC - LN?

Thanks Jarrod - I thought I had remembered seeing it awhile back.

So...I've read the posts on the link Jarrod provided but what I'm seeing is if you are calling back to the US on your US cell from Italy.

If I'm using my cell to make calls within Italy while I'm there do I just dial direct or dial 00-39 and then the number? I know I'm dense.....

Why not get an Italian SIM so calls within the country require no high charges? PM me for more info. I still have my two SIMs. Got home yesterday.

Very easy solution.

use the + sign.

To dial just press and hold 0, a plus sign will appear, then 1 (555) 555-1212 (not real number)

+15555551212

The plus sign takes care of all the complictions.
When in a country just dial the plus and the number as locals would dial it. The plus elimiates the access code (011) and the country code (39) the cell system does the work for you. And if you want to call your friend who also is in Italy with a US cell you jsut dial their same US number, just add +1 before the area code.

The great thing is that you can program this into your phone book as that person's number with the plus sign. When you get back to the US the system just ignores it. All your numbers still will dial.

North American mobile phone companies have agreements with operators in other countries that allow for automatic roaming, so you will register on an Italian company's system, not AT & T's (or whatever.) Therefore, you'll dial local numbers just like the locals do. All calls in Italy require you use the area code, even if it's a local call. So to call Rome from anywhere in Italy (including Rome), you would dial the city's area code, 06, then the local number.

So I'm in Italy now and added the $5.99 calling on my phone to have less expensive calls to the US before I left....only thing is Vodaphone IT which is the network here gives me a message saying the calling service is barred! So nothing works.

Checked at the Vodaphone store and they said it is AT&T's side that is causing the problem. What's the point of having a GSM phone??? Any solutions???

Try calling AT&T International Roaming assistance at +1-916-843-4685 (obviously you'll need a phone card or call via SkypeOut).

I had a problem with the vodaphone network as well when we were in the region around Florence. In other parts of Italy where there were other networks in place, everything was fine.
