Using the metro website for Rome or?

I’ve been on the website https://www.atac.roma.it/en/utility maps to search for Metro routing in Rome. As I’ve often encountered with city transport systems they are not intuitive. I was eventually booted out because it thought I was a bot! Soooo……anyone know how to use it easily to find a routing from A to B, particularly the format it wants Metro stations to be in?
My particular A to B is either Colosseo to Ottaviano-San Pietro (S. Pietro) or Cavour to Ottaviano-San Pietro. This is for a very early morning routing on a Tuesday as our tour at the Vatican Museums begins at 7:30am. Linea B goes to Termini and then Linea A from Termini to Ottaviano. I have that much figured out. What the site won’t give me is Colosseo to Ottaviano by Metro. I can only get info for taking the bus. Because I can’t get the Metro routing, I can not figure out if the bus or Metro will be better. The bus ride isn’t very fast and it doesn’t get us any closer than the Metro once across the river. In fact, the bus that is the most convenient to where we will be staying only goes to the Ponte Vittorio Emanuele and not the Vatican City side!
Also, if anyone has used any of the apps available for download, I would appreciate a recommendation.
Our trip to Rome isn’t until next spring, but as I think of things we will like to know, I start my research and this phase is not coming together.
I have also worked on google maps with slightly more success, but it still isn’t giving me data I can process-one trip in one swoop!
Thank you

Thanks Jeff. I will look into city mapper. I had found bus #81 but I believe it’s the one that only goes as far as Ponte Vittorio Emanuele. I will check again.
I can find some info on google maps, but by the time I got there today, I was less than pleased to be doing research after the struggles with the atac site.
I’ve plenty of time and it will fall into place.
