I have never traveled outside the country. I will be in Italy from Dec 26 to Jan 2. The primary purchase of my trip is to visit my son stationed at Camp Darby, just 4 miles from Pisa. I will be lodging at Camp Darby for the duration of my visit. Here are my questions. 1.In addition to Florence, where can I go (maybe alone) for day trips keeping the holiday in mind and returning to Camp Darby each evening? 2.I can take a motorcoach from the base to Rome ($55) and Florence ($45). Is this the way to go? 3.Where do you suggest for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day?
So close, yet so far! If the bus leaves Pisa early enough, and leaves Rome late enough....and you're prepared for a long, tiring day....go ahead, do Rome! The bus trip should be about 4 hours each way, so if it leaves at 6 am, you should be in Rome by 10 am. If it leaves at 8 pm, you'll be back home by midnight, and you can always sleep on the bus. It'll be hectic, but Rome is a compact city for tourists, so you should be able to catch the highlights in 8 or 10 hours, with some advance planning. You don't want to go to Italy and miss Rome! Just think of it as whetting your appetite to go back!
We appreciate your son's service to our country. My daughter is stationed in Vicenza, and often has duty at Darby. We stopped in Pisa on our way to Cinque Terre last July. Go to Cinque Terre if at all possible. The views of the sea are magnificent.
I envy your trip over the holidays! I hope your son will be able to travel with you. He has probably learned enough about the area to be very helpful.
