Using a ticket machine to buy ticket for IC from Rome to Orvieto

I will be arriving at FCO and taking the Leonardo Express to Rome Termini to take an IC train to Orvieto. I am waiting to purchase those tickets at the airport train station in the event that there are delays in arrival/passport security, etc.. I am finding conflicting info regarding using the ticket machines to make the seat reservation along with buying the ticket for the IC. According to the Man in Seat 61 site, this can be done on the machines. I am reading on a few other sites that this was true but is no longer the case. The Trenitalia site is vague in this regard. If I have to wait in the ticket line, I will probably not make my preferred connection. Any experience with this issue?

Get the easy to use Trenitalia app

Or take Regional train, doesn’t take much longer
You could purchase in advance, if you miss the booked train you can still take next train up to 4 hours

Yeah we bought a ticket same day Rome to Orvieto and it was RV (regional) no assigned seats you just have to validate the ticket in the yellow machine and get on. The trenitalia ap as long as you have data or internet connection you can buy ticket on the go.
You should know the trains run behind schedule a lot there.

Jazz+Travels-Did you leave from Termini or Tiburtina? I have no problem with regional trains in Italy; have used them before. All the regional trains I saw on the Trenitalia site for the am were from Tiburtina. I will only be using my phone with WIFI so wanted to use a paper ticket if possible, but will download the Trenitalia app.

If you don't want to use the app, there are plenty of ticket machines in Roma Termini. They are easy to use, just select English as your language. You should have no problem getting a ticket to Orvieto.

We took it from Roma Termini.
I remember being surrounded by pickpockets while buying it from the machine.

The ap stores the ticket you buy on wifi, you don't need WiFi or data to show it on your phone

Going from Roma Termini to Orvieto we just bought our tickets on the Trenitalia app a half hour before our departure. No problem with getting seats, there were plenty for a mid-morning weekday departure. I think that using the app is so much easier than using the ticketing machines.

As I recall, there are also staffed ticket offices at FCO, so you could also buy your tickets there. If you'd prefer to use a ticket machine, they're very user friendly. There are two different trains that depart from the airport, the Leonardo Express and the FM1. Be sure you board the correct train and DON'T forget to validate your ticket prior to boarding the train. using the ticket machines to make the seat reservation

You seem to imply that IC trains tickets and seat reservations can be purchased separately. That's not the case. Since there are only reserved seats on IC and Freccia trains, the seat reservation always come with the ticket.

At the counter at the airport station, ask for a through ticket from the airport to Orvieto.

They will pick the fastest route depending on the time of the day. If there is a long line use either the ticket machines or the app. The graphic interface is very similar, if you can use one you can use also the other.

Be always aware of your surroundings, but You won' t be surrounded by obvious pickpockets at Termini. If any random tourist were able to spot them so easily, pickpockets would starve.
Pickpockets are usually minors or pregnant girls,
who try to dress as if they were Italian teens going home from school.

What you actually should do is by a ticket from the airport to Orvieto, at the airport. At the ticket office, or from a ticket vending machine.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I have used the machines successfully on previous trips to Italy but agree that the app is an improvement and as a New Yorker, awareness is second nature! I have added the app to my phone and will just use it with wifi. When I look on the app or on the online site for the time I am arriving I see only 1 direct trip so I'm hoping to make that. If not, I have to take a train to Tiburtina first, then take an RV train to Orvieto. The next direct train from Termini is not until the afternoon.

In the afternoon direct trains from Rome to Orvieto depart at 13:02, 15:02, 16:35, 17:20, 18:15, 20:02.

The 16:35 and 18:15 departures are IC trains that have only reserved seats.

The 16:35 train (IC #596) departs from Roma Tiburtina, not from Roma Termini.

Thank you Rozan for posting the question and all for the replies.
We are taking the same journey on 16Sept. Since my husband and I are arriving from Paris and my son is arriving from Dulles, we are planning to purchase tickets when we meet at the airport.

I downloaded the app and have practiced search, but will most likely take Dario's advice and try the counter first.
Appreciate the assist.
Jules

Hi Jules! I decided to use the app since I don't imagine that the window will have different results. Are you arriving in the am or afternoon? There seem to be more options later in the day. I will be getting in on September 21 st. I see that you live in Solana Beach, such a beautiful place. My daughter, who lives in Carlsbad, will be coming from Paris and joining me in Orvieto.

When in Italy, in most larger stations, we found uniformed persons available and willing to help. We tried to get the older person discount, and didn't so a uniformed agent spent 20 min with us trying to find our application. Very good service.

Paul, great to hear that we will find assistance if needed.

Rozan, We were just talking about how lucky we are to live in such a nice place. My office is in Carlsbad so, I know it is lovely also!
Our flights are scheduled to arrive @ 0930 on EasyJet and son's @ 0815 on United. Hopefully both are on time and we clear passport control quickly. We will have checked bags on EasyJet.

We don't have any plans for Orvieto when we arrive other than checking into hotel so, we are trying to take it as it goes and use the time to fine tune our plans for Rome.
