Use the Palatine Hill entrance only to buy the tickets to Colosseum

Dear all,

I have been to Rome earlier, but this time around, am taking my 75 year old mom to visit. She has been advised not to climb too many stairs due to a heel problem.

We plan to enter only the Colosseum and no other museums..hence we ruled out buying the roma pass.

I do plan to buy the 72 hour ATAC pass, so we can use the public transportation to quickly travel between the various sights in Rome, as my mom cannot walk for long stretches either.

In order to gain a quick entry into the Colosseum and Roman Forum, can I use the Palatine Hill entrance at Via di San Gregorio, 30
to only buy the tickets. Not enter the Palatine Hill and Go across to the Colosseum/Roman Forum and enter there, as I already have the tickets?

If this is not possible, can you please suggest alternatives.

Also, will we be allowed to use the lifts/elevators in the Colosseum, seeing as she is not exactly in a wheelchair?

Thanks,
Jharna

Hi Jharna -

Why not just order your tickets in advance? You can easily do that here (official ticketing site):

http://www.coopculture.it/en/the-colosseum.cfm

That way you don't have worry about where to get them. You don't have to choose a particular day or time in advance; use your tickets on whatever day you choose to visit the sites.

Yes, you may use the lift at the Colosseum. One warning, though? There have been some reports of long backups of the security check lines. While tickets in hand allow you to skip long ticket lines, everyone must pass through the security checks and that's where there have been some long waits. RS contributor Laurel has been recommending booking a tour as people with those reservations appear to be getting in more quickly. This very recent thread may provide some insight:

I have used the lift at the Colosseum, be aware that it is at the furthest point from the entrance, so there is some walking to it, but nothing like climbing the (steep) stairs.

To answer one of your original questions, yes, it's fine to buy the ticket at one entrance but actually enter at a different spot.

Probably easier just to buy online. You still need to queue to go through security, May last year it took us 40 minutes to get through security.
