USB General Strike - June 20th

Time to figure out how to deal with strikes! I knew it could happen, I was just hoping it wouldn't.

June 13th - we are flying into FCO. Expected to arrive at 9:30 am. Looks like there is a CUB Transport Airline, Airport and Airport Related Sector worker strike from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM. If for some reason our flight is delayed? How does this affect us?

June 20th - Train booked from Firenze S.M. Novella to La Spezia with a transfer onto Monterosso with TrenItalia. Looks to be an USB General Strike for all of June 20th. Will this affect us? What do I do now? I assume private transportation will be impacted by this as well? Do I cancel my trains or wait to receive communication from TrenItalia? How do I get from Firenze to Monterosso on this date?

For June 20th I'm not sure but it looks like you'll be affected. Hopefully someone who knows the Italian train system will reply.

TrenItalia is not going to contact you, they assume you follow the news. Fortunately there are guaranteed trains in every region in the early morning and early evening. See the webpage https://www.trenitalia.com/it/informazioni/treni-garantiti-incasodisciopero.html and use translate to read it.

Unfortunately your travel involves two regions so it may be a challenge to find a plan that gets you to Monterosso or even to La Spezia. You've got some work to do. You'll have to look at the guaranteed trains for the Toscana region and check the stops on the Trenitalia site because the doc linked above only shows the ends of the line; perhaps some lines pass thru Firenze on their way thru La Spezia (unless someone can confirm no trains do this). Then from La Spezia it may be possible to take a cab to Monterosso, a bus if they are not on strike, or even the ferry if they are running (depends on who the operator is, time of day, and the state of the seas).

Another alternative is to rent a car if your Monterosso hotel can arrange parking.

It might be easier if you could change your schedule to travel on the 19th or 21st instead.

I am also flying into FCO on June 13, expected to arrive almost at the same time as you. (9:40 am for my flight.). So I am also interested in learning more about this strike and its possible effects. I don’t know what CUB Transport Airline means. Hoping someone can weigh in. Thank you KRF25 for asking the question and thanks to anyone who can provide insight!

Good question! I've been following the official strike website for our upcoming trip and it's been clear until I double checked after reading your post.

We are scheduled to travel Florence to Naples on Italo on June 20th. Since it's a General Strike, I'm guessing that includes public buses. So travel options that day would be limited to car hire, private transfer or maybe some sort of private bus. We booked refundable tickets on Italo through Omio, so that's at least some consolation. The Omio website says either Italo will notify us via email if the strike will impact us or they (Omio) will. Not sure how quickly they will notify us.

Guessing we both need a backup plan.

We ended up moving up our travel date to the 19th. Our Airbnb in Florence gave us a 50% refund on our stay on the 19th and we cancelled our train on the 20th.

We ended up booking a one night hotel in Monterosso on the 19th before we move to our Airbnb in Monterosso on the 20th. We got new train tickets for the 19th. It cost us a little more money but in the end we are going to be where we need to be so it’s worth it.

Now to figure out what all the strikes on the 13th mean. Will we be able to land and get our luggage?

Can someone share the website that lists strikes? We will be in Italy in mid to late June.

There are a couple of things about Italian strikes that are never completely understood. First, employers cannot ask in advance to workers if they are going to strike. So, you cannot tell for sure what will be happening till the time it really happens (or not). Second, if a service is cancelled due to a strike, it is considered as a "force majeure" event like bad weather or earthquake.
So, don't expect to be contacted in advance and told if your train will run or your flight will take off. Nobody can tell for sure. You can try to divine it - if a major union calls a strike, more workers will be on strike; if a minor union calls the same strike, you may not even notice it. But that is - nobody can tell for sure.
A way to counter the bad effects of this is to declare that a minimum service level has to be kept, so workers assigned to minimum services cannot go on strike. There are lists of long distance trains that will run even if a strike is called, while local trains will run during some protected times. For all other trains, they will run if railway dispatchers find that there are really engines to run and people to drive them; as they cannot ask in advance, they will do their best on the spot but cannot tell in advance.
This is why I am wary to reply when I see the recurring question "will this affect us"? The correct reply would be "we can try to guess, but it will be at most an educated guess". And when you risk misleading people, you are tempted not to reply at all...

OP: thank you for the schedule!
iachera: and thank you for the explanation of Italian strikes.

Fortunately, my train dates are not on this list!
