Hello we are traveling from the USA connecting in Zurich then arriving in Italy we will be checking 1 bag each I am wondering if this bag will go right to Italy or if we will have to collect in in Zurich and go thru customs. We do not have a long layover but Swissair has assured me that it is a proper amount of time. Hoping you will relieve my anxiety about only having a layover of 55 minutes.

As long you bought one ticket on Swiss Air USA to Italy with a connection in Zurich then the luggage you checked will go all the way to Italy. Which city are you flying into? If you miss the connection due to first flight leaving late then Swiss Air will arrange to put you on the next available flight to your final destination in Italy.

You will, however, clear the EU immigration (passport) check at Zurich as Switzerland is part of the Schengen treaty even though it's not in the EU.
