USA to Italy

We are planning a trip in September and renting a villa just south of Florence. We are debating whether to fly from US to Rome and take the train to Florence, or to fly directly to Florence from US. If anyone can share their experience we would appreciate it. Flying directly to Florence costs a bit more, but may decrease the overall hassle of traveling.

Funny Tom but I just posted a similar question. We were thinking about spending the first day in Rome to get over the jet lag and than taking the train up but we don't like the idea of losing a day. Hopefully we will get some answes here.

Even if flying into Florence is more expensive it probably is cheaper than flying into Rome with the additional transportation costs. And most likely some time savings. Florence is a smaller airport and a little easier to handle. Do Florence.

I do love the train from Rome to Florence because I love trains (enough said!) and also the scenery is great. And if you are not on time constraints you can take the regional train which takes almost 4 hours but is not expensive. On the other hand, getting from the FCO airport, to the Termini, to the track, and on the train with luggage is a whole other matter. Plus, it would be more convenient to leave from Florence when you depart Italy all together, instead of leaving from Rome, which would probably require going to Rome the night before if you have an early flight.
We have the the same "method" planned, because we are flying to Madrid and taking an EasyJet to Rome instead of flying straight to Rome. It's saving us over $300 per person, but we shall see if it was worth it...

When I was planning my trip to Italy I couldn't find any direct flights to Florence from JFK. All flights went through another European city adding 3 to 10 hours to the flight. We scrapped that idea and are flying into Venice and out of Rome.

Delta has a flight from JFK to Pisa, which would put you in the neighborhood. Flying to Roma then training to Florence is extra time and an extra expense. When you travel you either spend time or money...or both. Buon viaggio,
