Hi there,
My 75 year old father (who is not well traveled) has been invited to Pisa to visit a friend who retired there. We are thinking about scheduling him to be there mid April to early June. My dad likes to travel, except for the airport. Our plan was to send him on the trip solo and someone in the family will go to Italy during the last week of his trip to fly home with him. We live in the Bay Area (SFO airport) and I was hoping to fly him to Pisa direct but that is not an option. Does anyone know if there is a direct flight from the US to Pisa or do all flights have to stop in Europe somewhere. He would not do well navigating an overseas airport.
Thank you in advance for any information.

Delta has direct flights from NY-JFK to Pisa. If that doesn't work, would your father be willing to use wheelchair assistance at a connecting airport? That would allow an airport/airline employee to guide him through the maze of an unknown airport.
The Delta direct flight from NYC only operates in summer (June, July, August). So he may be able to fly back direct in June, but then he'll have to navigate, most likely, JFK to get a flight back to SFO (albeit with help). So maybe, if you are very worried, someone could escort him on the way over. The only thing better than a vacation in Italy is two vacations in Italy.
