US Senior Citizens in Rome

I've seen a couple of sites that mention free admission for students and senior citizens. Am I reading that correctly?

It usually means EU seniors, but you can always inquire.

You just have to ask. And they might ask to see your passport. I just crossed over last year so I am not in the habit of asking but when we were in Spain over New Years most of the major attractions were free for seniors. And it was not restricted to EU citizens.

I was in Italy with my parents in 2004 and they were not granted free admission. It was restricted to people from the European Union.

That was 04, it is now five years later. Things change so don't be afraid to ask. And the "senior age" may vary between 60 and 65. Just carry your passport so that you can quickly prove it.

Here are the regulations covering free enty to sites in Rome and in our experience (when visiting Italy with New Zealand relatives) Pompeii and Herculaneum. Boiled down it covers mainly EU citizens plus citizens of some other countries including Canada but not the USA.
