US credit cards & train tickets

We leave for Italy on the 8th. We planned to use the automatic ticket machines at the Milano train station, but I've read conflicting information about the "chip and pin". Will we be able to use our US credit cards in the machines? Thanks.

It depends. Many of the bigger station have a mix of new and old machines. The old machines will take mag strip cards just fine. It is the newer machines that take only chip and pin. How to tell the older machines? The ones will all the Am tourist standing around.

Cash is another option at the "Biglietto Veloce" or "Fast Ticket" machines. Make sure that the "Gives the rest to:" balance is high enough to make change for your transaction (usually I've seen it at 200 or 100 euro, but sometimes at 20). These machines are actually one of my favorite ways to break the 50s I get from ATMs. I can buy a 6 euro ticket with a 50, and get 20s and coins back, which are much easier to use.

Thank you both so much. We would like to use credit cards whenever possible, but it's good to know our options. I guess cash really is king!
