Chances are if it's on Trenitalia, it's only the trains. The good news is that the Italians are pretty darn organized about striking, usually giving people plenty of notice about when and where strikes will occur (mostly daytime hours). In 20 days in Italy, I encountered 3 different strikes - while waiting for the metro in Milan, they announced over the loudspeaker a strike following several days later. Two other strikes impacted ferries on Lake Como and the trains in Cinque Terre. Worst case scenario you take a later bus. There are also entire websites (mostly in Italian) that list just about every planned strike (Google "sciopero" and see what you get). While frustrating, apparently this is just the Italian way!
