Not an easy task without a car. No trains in Urbino.
There are plenty of buses from Urbino to Pesaro. Then from Pesaro you can take a train. In all likelihood the fastest route is with a train change in Bologna. When all is said and done you need at least 6 hours with public transport. I don't think it takes longer than 2.5 hours to drive. I would rent a car in Pesaro and have it while in Urbino.

Driving gives you the opportunity to also stop in Gubbio, another lovely destination not served by train. I had no problem getting a hotel room around 5 p.m. upon arrival in Gubbio (first week of October, 2014); my budget choice was http://www.grottadellangelo.it/. I only saw Urbino as a half-day stop on that trip; it was not crowded and I had the Palazzo Ducale practically to myself.
