upscale in Rome

We are wanting to stay in a 4- 5 star hotel in Rome that has a lot of character. One issue that is popping up is that many hotels don't seem to allow 3 to a room. Our 13 year old son is travelling with us, and we all stay in the same room. We've looked at Parco del Principi & The Excelsior... thoughts/comments?

Yes, we are asking for a triple room... some of the hotels do not seem to have "family" rooms.

Are you asking for a Triple room? You cannot book a double room and expect to put a third person in it. Don't know about Canada but in the US you tend to "buy" the room and how many stay in the room is not important. The price is same if two or three person. In Europe it tends to be the reverse -- everyone is charged. You should also look for family rooms.

Trish,
An apartment might be a better option. Have a look at sleepinitaly.com Some of their apts are VERY up scale.

Book for a triple. Check out the following: Cavalieri (a Waldorf hotel) The Inn at the Spanish Steps Hotel Residenza in Farnese
Mecenate Palace Hotel If you put in for 3 people in the room, you will get results through the venere.com and booking.com websites. You can sort by star ratings. Then check the TA ratings.

I chacked out the Grand Hotel and they allow 3 to the room. I agree Eurobooking.com is a great place to start , then email the hotels to confirm availability

Trish, You should also be aware that star ratings in Italy are quite different than star ratings in Canada and the US. Be sure to read reviews to determine for yourself what is "upscale" and what is not. 4-stars in Rome does not necessarily mean upscale.

In Rome you will spend very little time in your hotel room if you are like most tourists. I did a tour with a high end tour company and the last stop was in Rome at a 5 star hotel. Several years earlier I was on my own in Rome and stayed at a RS 3 star recommended hotel the Aberdeen which had a better room than the 5 star hotel.
