Updated Itin Questions - 17 night honeymoon (Venice, Florence, Tuscany, CT, Lake Como)

Hi all,

I posted a week or so ago about our 17-night honeymoon this coming late september/early october. Thank you all for your feedback and help. I have many more questions and would appreciate any feedback. I appologize in advance for this long post.

Rough Outline: We will be flying in and out of Milan. We land around noon in Milan on our first day and plan to immediately train to Venice. From Venice we will train to Florence. From Florence we will rent a car for a week, return the car (likely in Pisa or Lucca) and train to Cinque Terre. From Cinque Terre we will train to Varenna on Lake Como. Finally we will train back to Milan for our flight home. Here is a quick summary of where we will be each night:

1) Venice (after arriving by train the day of our flight)
2) Venice
3) Florence (after train from Venice)
4) Florence
5) Florence
6) Montepulciano (driving from florence)
7) Montepulciano
8) Montepulciano
9) Montepulciano
10) Siena? (driving from montepulciano)
11) Siena?
12) Siena?
13) Cinque Terre (return car in Pisa and train to CT) - Exact town to sleep in TBD
14) Cinque Terre - Exact town to sleep in TBD
15) Varenna (after train from CT)
16) Varenna
17) Milan (after train from Varenna)
18) Fly Home at 4 PM

That is our rough outline. No hotels/villas/etc have been booked. So this can be adapted. We are fairly sure we want to go to all of these places, but number of nights in each place it up in the air. Also, we dont want to change hotels every night. My biggest concern is in which town to stay and for how many days. We are active, in our early 30s, like to visit sites (museums, etc), but we also really like to relax, drink wine, and eat.

Questions:
1) Is one full day (2 nights) enough time in Venice. Note, our first night will be after flying to Milan and then taking the train to Venice. We can stick aroud and explore a little on the 3 day before taking the train to Florence. We could also move one of our Florence nights back into Venice or even move one of our Siena nights back into Venice (so we would have 3 nights in both Venice and Florence)

2) We really want to see Pisa and Lucca, but I am not sure that we want to stay in either place. Does it make sense to take a day trip from Florence (thus losing one day in Florence), or should we swing by Pisa and Lucca on our way to dropping off the car and then taking a train to CT. Assuming the latter, between Pisa or Lucca, which makes the most sense to drop off a rental car and train to CT

3) After Florence and before CT, we have 7 nights to spend in non-florence tuscany. From what i have read, we are positive that we want to stay in Montepulciano. I think it will be a great hub to explore hill towns and go wine tasting. Upon inspection of a map, i think it makes the most sense to drive to our furthest south destination before driving north, spending 3 nights in another town, and then catching our train to CT. Is 4 nights enough in Montepulciano? What other towns, wineries, sites, etc do you recommend near Montepulciano? We don't plan on going further south than Montepulciano, so we wont make it to Assisi

4) We have 3 more nights in non-florence tuscany. From what I have read, everyone love Siena. Is 3 nights a good amount of time to spend there? If not Siena, where else would you recommned us stay? Should we move one of these 3 nights to Venice (or somewhere else, perhaps CT)? I dont think we want to spend 3 full days in siteseeing in Sienna, are there other towns nearby Sienna that would be good day trips?

5) Are two nights enough in CT? We dont know what town we will be staying in yet, but will figure that out soon. If more time is warranted, where should we take it from?

As always, any help/comments on the itinerary as whole would be great. We are getting ready to start booking accommadtions, but want to make sure that we have a good itin outlined before we do.

Thanks!

Congratulation on your upcoming wedding. May you love long and prosper.

Just a little food for thought. It appears a bit rushed to me. Seven different places in only seventeen days, about five trips on trains, and several days you will be driving. Since it almost always takes longer to get from one place to another than anticipated, a good bit of time will be consumed between Points A and B. and all that time might not be spent in places with the best scenery. Considering the stress associated with most weddings, perhaps you should opt for a little slower pace with some rest and relaxation time. You want to return home with memories of places, people, and things you did together -- not just a blur of train stations. Perhaps limit yourselves to four places with day trips from those places.

Since you are flying into Milano, consider a short train ride to Lake Como or Venice to recover from the wedding hoopla. And one full day is not enough to do justice to Venice. Florence itself is great, but a lot of Tuscany, in my opinion, is overrated. The CT can be done well with two full days. Siena is good for a day.

When you do your detailed planning, consider what really interest you and the spouse and go for that. Everyone who replies will have different things that interest them and that may influence their advice.

If you are looking for a place to drop I would drop Lake Como and add 1 night each to venice on arrival and to CT
I think that would be a more relaxed plan and work out better.

I also think I would tweak a little to give more time and your day trips out of Florence, you could reduce Siena by a day easily and add a day to Florence for your day trip out of Florence. Siena, Florence and Montepulciano are all fairly close to each other.

Your overall plan looks good. The one change would be to do Siena after Florence. Why pay for parking if you don't have to. Bus from Florence -Siena,spend 2 nights. Add this nite to Varenna. Pick up your car as your leaving. Head to Montepulciano, stoping at Montalcino on the way, or drive to... Castellina in chianti, and Greve in chianti ending in Montepulcino. Very pretty drive.

On your way to CT, visit Pisa then drop the car in La Spezia.

Plan B is definitely less rushed and logisitcally works better but all comes down to how much you would miss not seeing Venice, since it is so unique.
Either plan works quite well I think so you should be the one to decide based on which you prefer Venice or Lake Como.

The idea of Siena after Florence to avoid the rental car charge and parking fees in Siena is a good one too if nothing is booked yet should be easy to flip those and the drive from Montepulciano to La Spieza is not too far. Returning the car close to La Spieza train station would be better than returning in Pisa.

It would not be that easy and a rushed day to try and return the car to either Pisa or Lucca ; make it into town to visit the sites and also then depart to CT all in the same day I fear especially with luggage that sounds tough. Seeing one or both of those towns as a day trip train from Florence if you desire is much better.

Both new itineraries are workable. It just depends on your preference -- Lake Como or Venice. While Lake Como is great, Venice is an exceedingly unique (and romantic) place.

Thanks everyone. We have talked about it, and I think we like the idea of Venice over Como. So here is what I think is our final Itin:

1) Venice (Train from Milan to Venice - arrive in the evening)
2) Venice – Site See in Venice
3) Venice – Site See in Venice
4) Florence (train to Florence) – arrive mid afternoon
5) Florence - Site see in Florence
6) Florence- Site see in Florence
7) Siena – (bus from Florence) – Site see in Siena
8) Siena – Site see in Siena - or explore near by towns in Chianti
9) Montepulciano (Rent car in Siena, drive to Montepulciano) – stop and see towns along the way – Arrive in early evening
10) Montepulciano
11) Montepulciano
12) Montepulciano
13) Montepulciano (Over the four days/nights in Montepulciano, wine taste, explore towns, relax)
14) CT – (Drive to Pisa) spend a few hours in Pisa. (Drive to to La Spezia) - return car. (Take train to CT) - Location TBD
15) CT – Site See in CT
16) CT – Site See in CT
17) Milan – (Train from CT to Milan) – arrive mid-afternoon, site see, sleep in Milan.
18) Fly home at 4 PM

If anyone has recommendations on places to stay or eat in any of these location, I would love to hear about it. We arent trying to stay at super nice places, but we also refuse to stay in hostel-like accomodations. If there are one-bedroom apartments or nice boutique hotels, we really like places like that. Also in montepuliano, we would prefer to stay in town, or close to the town so long as there is parking.

Thanks

Plan A with Venice looks grand! Venice is a great place to wander and get lost in. Just mark your hotel on google maps - when you are done wandering and thoroughly lost just get walking directions back to it!

I think you be glad you slowed the pace down a bit - it is a honeymoon after all - you need time to just sit in a cafe with a glass of wine and watch or pack a nice picnic and set off in the hill country. Venice early in the morning is pretty cool too.

Congrats & enjoy!

In the CT, I highly recommend Hotel Villa Steno. Try and get room 6. It has a really great view and a fantastic patio where you can just take in the view and relax. The Hotel Villa Steno is located in Monterosso. A nice side benefit to that hotel is that the will do your laundry at a very reasonable price. I also liked the Hotel California in Florence. It is located 2 blocks from the Duono and 2 blocks from the Accademia where the statue of David is located. It is on the same street as the Accademia and has 23 rooms. It is a very quiet hotel.

Hotel Villa Steno in Monterosso for the CT is really nice, in Florence the Hotel California is good, and in Venice Pensione Guerrato is a good place in the Rialto area.

Your final itinerary is perfect.
You'll have time to savor all the towns visited.
For apartments in Venice and Florence see http://www.cross-pollinate.com. Venice, Studio Mozart and Florence, apartment Giglio.
Both should meet your requirements and are in good locations without breaking the bank.
Agree with Villa Steno, have stayed there several times.
Can't recommend anything in Montepulciano. We usually stay at Borgo Rapale which is closer to Siena.
On your drives in Tuscany be sure to check out Castiglione del Largo. Short 30 min drive from Montepulciano. Beautiful lake setting.
