Thanks to all for the feedback to my OP. Ready to book flights but ...home from Milan, or Rome? After 6 nights in Switzerland we will begin our 15(ish) night Italy visit at Lake Como. Wavering between 2 routes, same places. Maybe I am over analyzing!!!
Option A
* Lake Como (2 nights)
* Florence (3 nights)
* Cinque Terre (2 nights)
* Tuscany/Umbria with car (5 nights)
* Rome - (3 nights) fly home
Option B - same places, alternative route breaking up Assisi/Umbria and Tuscany
* Lake Como (2 nights)
* Florence (3 nights)
* Assisi ( 1 night)
* Rome ( 3 nights)
* Tuscany with car (4 nights)
* Cinque Terre (2 nights)
* Milan (1 night before flight home)

I would reduce the number of places. Also, Rome needs more than 3 days. Pick four places and don't try to do Umbria and Tuscany in the same trip.
