Update on foot problem that threatened trip

I just returned from 16 days in Italy (still battling jet-lag as I write this). I had posted a few days before the trip that I was experiencing foot problems that threatened the trip. Everyone on this forum gave me great advice and in the end, I decided to go. I had gotten a cortisone shot in my big toe which kicked in when I got to Italy and it saved the day. Long story short, we had a GREAT time & I'm so glad I went. The main thing that I had problems with were stairs but I took them slow & my husband helped me. I couldn't climb the towers in the hill towns in Tuscany as I'd originally planned but I sent hubby up in my place to get the photos. I had also wanted to hike the trails in the C.T. but that problem was eliminated by the fact that the trails were closed most of the time we were there (due to rain) so we took the boat when the sun peaked through & I got my harbor-front pictures that I wanted. The small uneven cobblestones in Rome were also uncomfortable for me to walk on but I just took it easy & walked a little slower. We used taxis a lot & also the hop on, hop off bus. We walked about 5-10 miles/day so my old tired feet pulled through for me and I was so thankful.

Thanks for everyone's wonderful advice & encouragement...not just regarding my foot problem but in general. I planned this trip for 11 mos and used this forum as a planning tool. It proved to be an invaluable tool. Thanks again.

Glad to hear you went!
When I was there this time last year, first thing I did, on the very first day, was threw my back out big time. I COULD have laid around and felt sorry for myself, but I too trudged on; I walked MILES upon MILES and climbed stairs and went up the Duomo in Florence and went full speed ahead. When I got home, I collapsed; but I'm SOO glad I went and did what I meant to do, regardless of ridiculous pain!
Warrior Princesses; that's what we are! =-)

Sheron,

Thanks for the update on your trip! It's great to hear that everything went well, despite the circumstances. If you're like most of us here, you're already starting to plan the next trip!

I can certainly appreciate the jet lag situation. I usually find it worse on the trip home.

Cheers!

Glad to hear everything turned out great.

My husband is currently in a walking boot due to a torn achilles tendon and we leave for our long awaited European tour in 10 days. I think his injury may have been a blessing in disguise. I tend to want to run through everything too fast and keep moving. His boot will force us to slow down and taken things a little slower.

Good to read about your successful trip. I also almost cancelled my trip to Italy (sitting in JFK right now waiting for my flight to Pisa)due to a foot problem (podiatrist recommended surgery during my vacation time so I wouldn't miss so much work). I spent 1 night thinking about it...and decided Italy could not wait. I'm heading to Cinque Terre also, and plan on walking slow, resting frequently, taking the local train and shuttle bus and pushing on. Your success is exactly what I needed to hear!Grazie!

Elizabeth, here is my itinerary. Flew into Rome, spent 5 nights in Rome (did all the typical first-time Rome tourist stuff), then spent 5 nights in Tuscany (visited Orvieto, Volterra, San Gimignano, Siena, Pienza, Lucca & Montepulciano). Spent 3 nights in the Cinque Terre & then 2 nights in Varenna (Lake Como). I absolutely loved every place we visited. Lake Como was certainly the most relaxing of all the places we visited; there were far less people there than anywhere else & we stayed at a hotel right on the lake so it was the relaxing end to the trip that we needed. I am SO glad that I didn't cancel the trip (though I do recognize that without the cortisone shot, I probably couldn't have made it). This was our 2nd trip to Italy and yes, I am already planning my next one! Italy is so addictive!

Thank you again everybody for your kind encouragement and words of wisdom during my 11 mos of planning.
