Update on Cinque Terra?

Does anyone have an update on the storm in CT? I am due to take the train there from Florence on Wednesday for two days. When I try to check weather it gives a storm warning from last Friday. Any ideas on how to find out how my trip might be affected?

I am wondering this also. How did the CT fair in the wake of the storm that was supposed to be coming? Is everyone safe?

kr,

Is that this Wednesday? The current forecast for Monterosso indicates....

  • Wed. - Partly sunny with a shower, high 19C & low 14C
  • Thu. - Cloudy with spotty showers, high 19C & low 10C
  • Fri. - Mostly sunny, high 18C & low 10C

Of course this may change.

I thought kr was referring to the storm that was supposed to hit Oct 14. That is what I am concerned about. Anyone have news on that storm?

Charlie, it was the Oct 14th storm that the Savevernzza site is referring to. They do not indicate that there was any significant damage. Ken's forecast report just illustrates that the storm has indeed passed.

Thanks for all your replies. It seems like it will be just some rain. Still looking forward to my visit. Hope to do some hiking. Kathleen

kr,

If you were planning to hike the Sentiero Azzurro trails, you'll have to check the status when you arrive there. It's getting a bit late in the season and the rains could affect the status. Note that only the Monterosso - Vernazza - Corniglia segments were open this year. You will not be able to hike the famous Via dell' Amore as that's been closed since September 2012, and the end is blocked as shown in THIS recent photo which was taken at the Manarola end.

There is however an extensive network of trails in the Cinque Terre, so if you get a sunny day you should be able to do lots of hiking.

I was there a few weeks ago before the rain and, as usual, there were at least two closed trails. Two of the four main trails connecting the towns were closed. And this was not just for a few unlucky days. I found out they had been closed for weeks and months.

I am finding this to be a recurring problem with the CT. Trails are closed for long periods of time. Combine this with the overwhelming crowds and I am fast coming to the conclusion that the CT should be avoided unless your main goals are to shop, eat, and maybe sit on a beach. And do it all in a big crowd.

Or you can hike the high trail from Manarola to Corniglia...although not for the faint hearted!

Those two sections of the Sentiero Azzurro (from Corniglia to Manarola, and Manarola for Riomaggiore) have actually been closed since 2012 but as mentioned there are other, albeit longer and /or more strenuous trails which can be taken to get around them. Reference the park website Priscilla provided above for map and information.

There are many more trails which can be explored besides the Sentiero Azzurro so a hiker need not avoid the CT just because of those couple of closures.

I believe the section from Corniglia to Manarola may have been closed even before 2012. It's been so many years that I've lost track of when it was actually closed.

Ken, I think you're right about the Corniglia-Manarola piece but I can't remember either!
