Update for the Florence ZTL

I saw a comment about how some of the ZTL entrances in Florence are marked poorly still, even though there are many with the new traffic type light system in place. Here are some photos of newer lights: http://www.florence-on-line.com/travel-tips/new-ztl-traffic-light.html http://www.florence-journal.com/florence/2010/12/another-new-ztl-light-in-florence.html But what many people don't know is that there are several places where although you can drive a car "into" the ZTL, you are NEVER allowed to. Not all ZTL entrances are created equal in other words. For instance, coming over the Ponte alle Grazie and entering on Via De Benci is NEVER allowed, even on Sunday or at night, etc. This is not only a ZTL entrance, it is a public transportation/emergency vehicles only entrance. These kinds (there are several) of entrances do not have the new light system yet and may never have it. You have to rely on the red circle sign and simply DO NOT ENTER. There is an excellent map by the Comune of Florence - http://news.comune.fi.it/muoversi/servizi.php?servizi=Servizi click on "MOBILITA" in the left column, and then "Varchi ZTL" - those are the only places you can ever enter the ZTL - meaning - even if you have permission (say to return your car rental, get to your hotel, or from a parking garage), you can only use these entrances and not the other kind mentioned above.
