Upcoming Travel to Italy and Croatia

Hi everyone - So we are planning a trip around a cruise we are taking that starts in Split Croatia. My husband and I would like to spend the week before exploring Bologna, Italy and surrounding area. First off, do you have any suggestion if we plan to spend 4-5 nights in Bologna to explore the city and do day trips in the Emilia-Romagna region. Then we will need to travel from Bologna or Venice to Split Croatia. What's the best way to travel from this area to Split Croatia?

Any ideas are welcome! Thank you in advance.

Take a ferry from Italy to Croatia - Rovinj is a lovely little town, Pula is a little city.. You can rent a car in either place (probably more options in Pula, but Rovinj is the more charming little town) and drive to Split and drop the car there. (Driving in Croatia is easy, but you may need an International Driving Permit, not sure.) On the way to Split, detour to Plitvice Lakes National Park, an amazing park with two big lakes, full of dozens of little waterfalls connected by hiking trails. You'd want at least one night at Plitvice most likely.

You could also take a ferry directly to Split from Ancona, Italy if you want to skip Croatia.

I did 7 nights last summer in Bologna and did day trips to Modena, Parma, Ferrara, Ravenna and San Marino. If you had to prioritize, I would say Parma, Ravenna and San Marino were my favorites. Modena and Ferrara were interesting too if you have enough time, which you may not with 4-5 nights. I would recommend getting a hotel or apartment on the north side of town so you're closer to the train station for the days when you want to explore Emilia-Romagna.
