My husband and I, in our 60s, plan a week in Florence & a week in Venice in the fall. We plan to stay in an apartment in each city and take day trips. We like the service that Untours says it offers: transportation at arrival & departure and between cities, plus someone to have available for any questions. We have rented apartments on our own in other places without problems. Does anyone know of other companies that might provide the assistance that we are seeking?

I know that Monogram Tours, a division of Globus, does much the same thing as Untours, if you want to make a comparison.

No advice to offer specific to your request. Rick Steves' "My Way" tour of Italy gives you lots of sightseeing flexibility, but includes hotels. Our single-city, one-week tours include about 50% guided sightseeing and 50% free time.

Here's an organization based in Rome and started & owned by an American couple.
They curate the apartments they list on their site, own a hostel/hotel in Rome and have recommended accomodations in multiple cities in Europe. Not sure if it's up to the standard that you might want (i.e. transportation to/from).
