On my last trip in 2017 I rented a car from Hertz to explore Umbria. Upon return to States I received a copy of speeding ticket, presumably from traffic camera. Understandably, the ticket was in Italian, but had no cover letter as to how to remit payment. I ignored and never heard anything again.
I'm looking to return in 2022 and concerned this may be a problem coming through Customs. Should I be?
Practically, you will not have difficulties. I strongly suggest that you not drive in Italy during this trip.
That's funny. I experienced the same issue. My ticket was also 2017 but in Puglia. I am now planning a trip to Italy for this May.
You are free to go. Nobody reports unpaid tickets to the Polizia di Frontiera (Border Police). Also zero chance of the highway police or the Municipal Police in the town you got the ticket to know about your ticket two years ago. They have more important matters to take care of nowadays, like enforcing wearing a mask or making sure you are vaccinated before entering a restaurant.
