Unlocking Droid Phones for use of Sim Card

Is it necessary to advise Verizon prior to our trip to Italy that we will be purchasing a SIM card for our droid phones?
Thanks in advance,
Diane

If your phone is unlocked, there's no problem. If still under contract, you'll have to use a Verizon overseas plan.

I have a Samsung S5 with Verizon, which is unlocked. I am going to suspend service with Verizon for two months and purchase a Vodaphone or TIM sim when I arrive in Italy. If you add Verizon's International plan on your phone you will get 100 minutes, 100 Text, and 100 MB of Data for $40 on top of your regular bill. Not such a great deal considering the price/ packages Vodaphone and Tim offer ... much more data and minutes for around €30 a month. If your Verizon phone is 4G/LTE capable it is unlocked.

I was just going to post a similar question - we have an iPhone 6s with a Verizon plan and have checked out the international plan they offer - but have seen other posts about Vodophone Italian Sim cards. How do you know if your phone is "unlocked"? Today's Target ad has an LG phone w/o plan for $9.99 - wondering if I purchased that to take to Italy for our 6week trip this fall, would a IT Sim card work in that?

ALL Verizon 4G LTE devices are UNLOCKED ... Android or iPhone. Use your existing phone and buy a Italian SIM for it. NO problem.

You could ask your carrier to find out if your phone is unlocked. You should also borrow a friend's SIM from a different carrier and confirm your phone is unlocked. At least you will figure out how to open up your phone and swap cards.

If it is not unlocked, you could ask your carrier to unlock it for about $25. You can also go on eBay and get an unlock code for about $5. Just find a seller with lots of high ratings and make sure you provide the exact model for your phone.

You do not have to cancel your existing Verizon sim. Just swap it out. Do not lose it! You need to put it back in when you get home. We used the TIM Welcome plan when we were in Italy. Google it.
