United connection in Frankfurt

We booked flights using frequent flier miles with United, flying from SFO to Milan. We change planes in Frankfurt to a Lufthansa Cityline flight (partner with United). The US flight lands in Frankfurt at 9:55 and the flight from Frankfurt to Milan departs at 10:55. Is this really feasible? I assume we can make the connection since it's what United offers on its website. We travel with just carry-on bags.

That is pretty tight even for Frankfurt. If you could change it I would. To increase you chances get a seat as forward on the left hand side of the plane for that you can get off as fast as possible. You will need to go through immigrations and another security so look for the short line for quick connections.

I would NOT change the flight.
One hour is not a lot of time, but it is doable. I've done it in less time at FRA.
You are on flight LH272 departing FRA at 10:55 and arriving at Milan Linate (LIN) at 12:05.
If it is a LH Cityline it is likely a regional jet Embraer 190/195, not a large plane (100 pax). Boarding will end at 10:40. That means you have 45 min. to deplane, go through passport control, pass another security check and get to the gate.
Everything is in Terminal 1, since you are with a LH partner, if your arrival at FRA is timely, you will make it, just don't stop at the bathroom (use the bathroom on board before landing). In the event you miss the plane, Lufthansa will put you on the next plane to Milan. The next plane to Milan Linate (LIN) is at 3:45pm, but Lufthansa also has an earlier flight to Milan Malpensa (MXP) at 12:25pm. If you don't mind landing at Malpensa instead of Linate, they can put you on that one. Once at Malpensa just get a train to Milan. MXP is farther from Milan city center (35 miles instead 5 miles of Linate), but they have the fast Malpensa Express train that can get you to the Cadorna station in 32 min. (or to Centrale in less than 50 min.).

You should be able to make it. It will be tight as you will be changing terminals and going through immigration (never had to wait more than a couple of minutes there). Just keep your eyes open and follow the signs. We have done it many times.

We had 1.5 hours between flights through Frankfort. We RAN to make the connection and were the last to board the bus for the plane. It seems that Lufthansa knew we were coming and held the bus.

Make sure- as Roberto says- to get off the plane and go as fast as you can through passport control. I thought we'd also have to go through security, but for some reason our last trip (Denver-Frankfort-Florence) we only had passport control- that saved a lot of time.

We landed at C and the domestic flight left from A. It was a fairly long walk and we had carry on, so we were loaded down a bit, but we made it.

Just have to hope your plane leaving the US is not delayed. I think that Lufthansa ( IMO) is one of the best airlines and I'm sure they will book you on the next flight if you miss the original. It seems that the domestic flights through Germany are not as over booked as flights in the US.

The walk from Area C of terminal 1 to Area A of the same terminal is indeed long. I often use FRA from SFO to Florence, and sometimes, because of delays, I have only 30 min. from gate to gate and I have to run full speed. I suggest therefore that you have comfortable shoes, just in case.
The other thing is that in case you get delayed and miss that 10:55 flight, Lufthansa can put you on the next flight to Milan Malpensa only if you don't have checked luggage. If you have checked luggage they will have no choice but wait for the next flight to Linate which is much later in the afternoon. Therefore DON'T CHECK BAGGAGE, travel with carry on only.

Don't know if this will help, but often on flights in the States, when close to landing I have told the flight attendants that I had a tight connection time, they would assist me and others in the same situation to exit the plane first. They can also communicate to the local Lufthansa powers that be that you have arrived and are rushing to make your next flight. Good luck!
I myself will be in a similar situation with Lufthansa on May 1, with a connection time of 1.5 hours in Munich.

I've been following this thread with interest, because we are flying on United/Lufthansa and connecting through FRA on our next trip. United sold us tickets with 1.5 hour connection windows, which made me a little uncomfortable; but I assume(d) that they will get us to our destinations if we miss the booked flight. I did check to see that there are later flights; however, they are a lot later. On our last trip, we had the same set-up with even tighter times. Outbound worked beautifully. Returning, we flew from Zagreb to FRA and landed on time; but then we sat on the tarmac for what seemed like a very long time, because there was no gate available. My blood pressure rose a few points with every sweep of the second hand on my watch. When we finally were able to deplane, we made a quick check with the LH rep, who told us the gate we needed and assured us it wasn't far. We ran all the way, not an insignificant feat for a couple of mid-70 year olds. They were already boarding when we got there. That wasn't an enjoyable experience; however, it has given me confidence that the airlines know what they're doing. (Tune in in June to find out if my confidence is misplaced. lol)

Thanks for all the responses. One hour is really cutting it close, but I don't want to pay the fee to change it. I'm glad we got our Rick Steves rolling backpack bags! And we will definitely be wearing our running shoes. I'm thankful the return flight has a 1.5 hour window instead of just an hour, but would have liked more time because we're going to be going home on an internat'l flight and not hopping on a local route.

Since you are flying on miles, a different option may not be available using miles right now. So just wait until either United or Lufthansa changes the flight times. If either of them shortens the connection to time to under an hour, call United and ask them to change your flights accordingly (later Lufthansa flight, earlier United flight). Even if there are not United mileage fares (or saver fares) available, if you are persistent, you will get the flights you want. Be sure to have your options available before you call United.

Thanks for the advice, Karen. Chances are they will change flight times between now and then. They've done it once already. We would like to make the flight to Linate because we're picking up our Milan Passes there (and therefore will get to take the bus from Linate to Milan Central train station for free). The flight back from Venice is the one that really makes me nervous with only 1.5 hours between flights. If we miss our United flight from Frankfurt to SFO, we're sunk.

Hi Melinda,

I think you are worrying needlessly. There are numerous flights from FRA to SFO. If you should happen to miss your connection, the airline will put you on another flight. Should you miss the last flight of the day, thanks to consumer-friendly EU regulations, they have to provide some comforts, like meals and a room. And just a response to the post above about airlines holding flights: we were once flying to Europe, on Delta, with a connection in Cincinatti. Close to boarding time an announcement advised us that the take-off would be delayed because there was a group of passengers coming in on a flight that was late. Ours was the only daily flight to whatever city; and, of course, it's to the airline's advantage not to have to deal with a bunch of disgruntled passengers.
