Unique gifts to buy in Rome and Assisi

I'm travelling to Rome and Assisi in September 2007. Anyone have any ideas for reasonably priced things I could buy from either of these places to bring back home for my family and friends? I've been asked to bring back Italian chocolates. But is there anything else I should keep my eye out for?

I always look for table linens and ceramics.

You can bring home wine bottle stoppers as an inexpensive gift, or hand woven hand towels.

Perugia is the best place for chocolate (Baci), but you can buy that in the US at almost any store. Nutella is Italian too, but that's available in the US also.

I love to shop the groceries and look for sea salt, olive oil, etc to bring home for personal use and for friends. Prints are good too. Look for smaller stores with handmade items for truly appreciated gifts from Italy.

Assisi has some nice ceramics stores with lots of variety...you can purchase small bowls to bring home.
There is also a wonderful candy store in town!

The linen are lovely and so are the ceramics. You will find the shops have lots of interesting little things that don't cost a lot of money. There is a kitchen ware shop opposite the spanish steps with is great I always find some terrific little gifts there. Can't remember the name but it is right opposite facing the steps. Great little gift packs of oil and vinegar and such.

If you go to see the Mouth Of Truth in church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin (had scaffolding in interior & much renovation going on recently) there is an interesting gift shop there. Replicas of MOT that are various sizes and very light weight. We brought several of those back last trip and wish we'd bought more. Rome is pricey for shopping IMO.
