Undiscovered gems in Tuscany?

We've got a few days in Tuscany. We'll be staying in Florence and Siena but are planning on doing some day trips around the area too. I'm looking for idea for restaurants or things to do in either city or the general Tuscany area that are not over-run with tourists. Does anybody know of any things to do or places to eat that are mostly visited by locals?

In Florence, the area along via de Calzaioli, between the Duomo and Piazza Signoria is pretty undiscovered and quiet in the hours between 1:00 and 5:00.

Roberto is messing with you, in case you can not tell.

Tuscany is pretty well discovered by now. :-)

We did find that Monteriggioni was quiet on an October day, and even Montalcino was low key in early July (it really picks up in the fall when the vineyards are being harvested and wine is being made). The Chianti Road was peaceful one sunny Sunday in March when we drove it. In fact, we were the only people in the fine osteria we chose for lunch.

When are you traveling?

We will be travelling in the beginning of September, and we'll have a car once we depart Florence.

Montepulciano is a good place for the day. La Grota, outside of the city wall is the best place to eat. Enjoy

We just returned from our Italy trip and found Florence and much of Tuscany to be VERY touristy. The exceptions were places like San Quirico d'Orcia, which is west of Montepulciano. It's in the prettiest part of Tuscany (in my opinion) and we were the only English speakers the afternoon we were there. We also liked Pienza and found it to be much more charming and less touristy than Montepulciano where 90% of the people were Americans carrying around Rick Steves or Lonely Planet books. ;-)

Undiscovered gems in Tuscany?

IF there is such a place, I suspect those who know of it are not going to tell, so it will stay that way, and they can enjoy it.

I enjoyed Castellina in Chianti as it seemed - to me - to have fewer overall tourists than many other places.

Just got back from a week stay in Cortona.
Cortona is an hour drive from Siena and not as touristy as the other places noted and which we have been too.
We enjoyed are stay, nice restraunts and good shopping. Not your typical tourist junk.

I'll second San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza. We stayed in San Quirico for two weeks and were frequent visitors to Pienza. The previous trip we stayed just outside of Montepulciano for two weeks. We enjoyed both locations San Quirico definitely was less touristy. Get on the back roads between these three towns, if its a gravel road so much the better.

Cinque Terre. Wait. Some guy with a travel show did a segment on it. It might have a few more tourists now.

Doug
I didn’t recommend the undiscovered gem of Vernazza simply because the OP specifically requested Tuscany and Vernazza is in Liguria.

Also, without a car, there are really no undiscovered locations I could suggest.

If you have a car you might want to visit Volpaia. It is a charming little village in the Chianti region which we enjoyed very much. Castellina in Chianti is also worth a look.

San Casciano Dei Bagmi, Celle Sul Rigo and Radicofani are all delightful and relatively untouristy

I'll second Volpaia and Castellina, 2 of my happy spots in Chianti. They both have good winery's too.

I've posted these 2 gems a few times before...the American Cemetery 7 miles outside of Florence is beautiful and serene (Arlington in Tuscany). The curator of the cemetery said the visitor rate is not what he would expect of such an historic area. We also love the Vinci museum in the town of LdaV birth, it is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. Engineering students have replicated Leonardo's designs and they are amazing.
