Can someone please explain the difference between the base price, the economy price, and the super economy price quoted on the Trenitalia train schedules. We are planning to travel by train from Rome to Naples. We will travel 1st business class, but after that I do not understand the three choices. We will travel one way so the same day return travel does not apply.
Base fare is the normal fare, you can buy this fare at any time prior to departure. Economy fares have some restrictions on changes you can make (usually involves a fee). Super economy fares are available while the limited number lasts, and lock you into a particular train/date/time. You have to buy a whole new ticket if you miss your train (unless your connecting train was late). Roninrome.com has extensive information on train travel in Italy.
Thank you, I will try RoninRome!
As Zoe explains, base price is the ordinary full fare. If you buy in Italy, this is the fare. Economy fare is non-refundable but does permit a change before travel. Super Economy is both non-refundable and non-exchangable. A limited quantity of economy and super economy fares are shown as the run appears for sale. The quantity is established based on several factors. The Super Economy fares usually go very quickly. Once gone for the list run, that's it. They're gone. Same with the economy fares but these often last a bit longer. They usually are gone by the travel date. It's really nice that you want to travel 1st business class for a 60-90 minute ride. train ride. In reality, the trains are very nice and 2nd class is just fine.
