Underground Trou

I have reviewed other postings, but I'm confused. My family of 6 would like to take this tour, but we would like to take a Guided Tour. So many tours seem to overlap each other. I need advice on a "fun" guide service...we're not too serious about our history, but would enjoy the knowledge gained in an interesting format. I'd so appreciate your help....arriving in Rome first of August. Thanks in advanced...confused Texan

This is one of my favorite typos ever on this board. "Underground Trou." Thanks so much for making me smile today. Seriously. :-) As for your question, the only underground tour I've done in Rome is the Scavi Tour under St. Peter's. It was amazing, but fairly serious and not really for kids. I think they even have a minimum age threshold.

"I think they even have a minimum age threshold." Yes, Scavi does have a minimum age - children not allowed unless at least 15.

I'm so sorry about my sloppy typing. But...glad I made you smile. I had heard about the Third Level Colosseum etc... Tour. That's the info I'm searching for. I would love to leave the driving and guiding to someone else. So any help would be appreciated. I'm not prepared for this trip, si I'm needing the Cliff Notes!!!!

The only way to see the colosseum underground and third level is with a tour. You cannot visit them on your own. You can book an English tour directly by calling 011 39 0639967700 The call only takes a few minutes and is very inexpensive. Be sure to let them know if your family is using a romapass for entry or if you'll need to book entry as well as the tour. Donna

And if you don't have the RS Rome 2011 book yet, you simply HAVE to buy it. It's loaded with all the logistical information you'll need for the major sites in Rome.

Thank you very much for that number. I do not know what a RomaPass is? Any help would be appreciated. I can't wait to purchase RS Book. Unfortunately, I live in a rural community, so I will have to wait until we can "get to town" ha! I don't have the time to purchase it online. Thanks to all for your input!! Happy Firepopper Day

I always thought you "rural types" were the ones who did the most ordering online because it was so convenient. :-) Oh, well. Happy travels.

Julie, the romapass is a sites and transportation pass for Rome. Basically, it costs 25 euros, is valid until midnight of the third day and allows you use of all public buses, trams and metro lines. You can enter the first two sites covered by the pass for free and all other sites are at a discounted rate. You can find more information at: romapass.it You can find a list of sites covered and the discounts. The romapass will not work at the Vatican museums. The romapass will not cover the cost of tours. If you visit 3 sites covered by the pass it will save you money. The romapass allows you to skip the lines which can save you more than an hour at the colosseum. Donna

And one funny thing about the Romapass is that it considers the Forum, the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill as one site. So plan to do all those the same day. Happy travels, and stay cool. It will be hot hot hot in August. :-)

The colosseum, forum and Palatine hill are all counted as one site... however, you are allowed one entry into each site over 2 days so you could do the colosseum on the first day and palatine hill and the forum on the second and only use 1 of the 2 entries for the Roma Pass. Unfortunately you will also have to pay for the tour as it is not included in the colosseum entry. Does anyone know the dates that the tour is available? Last I heard they stopped for a period of time mid-summer. The scavi tour is also handy in that it allows you to bypass the line for St. Peters. Following the tour, you can just walk into the basilica without going through security.

I just booked the Underground Colosseum Tour, at the number posted earlier, for July 12th. So it is currently open. We are not getting the Roma Pass since we will be using cabs if necessary (family of 4), and we paid for the Colosseum/Palatine/Forum Combo ticket plus the Underground tour, at a total cost of 21 euro's per person - there was no children's discount. Hope that helps. When you call the number, they do have the option of selecting English. Someone else recently posted, on this site, the exact procedure for making this call; we followed it, and it worked like a charm. It wasn't too old a posting. You can probably look back a few weeks and find it.
