Undecided itinerary- Amalfi coast or more time inTuscany

My husband and I are starting Italy in Sicily with a rental car for 5-6 days. We then have three days for other parts in Italy before or after 2 days in Venice. Options: fly Palermo to Venice then train to Florence or someplace in Tuscany (any ideas)or travel from Sicily up the Amalfi coast to Venice. The second option I'm not sure if it's practical in only 3 days and whether rental car can go from Sicily to the mainland.

With only 3 days, I would not add another stop. Fly to Venice from Palermo and stay in Venice. It's worth 4 or 5 days. You can side trip to Padua, go to the islands, and enjoy not having a car.

You won't need a car after Sicily, you'll get around faster by train, and it's probably very expensive to take the ferry, not to mention time-consuming. There may also be a hefty drop-off charge for the car. Fly. From the Amalfi coast, it will take you at least half a day to get to Florence. Too far for the little time you have. Fly from Palermo to "wherever," then go by train to wherever you are flying home from.
