Hi everyone. I thought I had a workable itinerary but now I’m rethinking a couple days. If I go to Ostia Antica on a Saturday morning, will I have time to do a food tour in Trastevere in the late afternoon? From other posts I’ve read, Ostia Antica doesn’t sound like an all day trip. Maybe 5 to 6 hours including transport time? I’m moving the food tour from a two museum day so I’m not rushed through them.
As always thank for your help.
In 2022, I toured both Ostia Antica and did a food tour of Trastevere.
Yes, I believe you will have time. The time commitment was about five to six hours.
However, Ostia Antica might prove captivating to you. I find antiquities of any kind fascinating and lingered to see more of the site. Given that Ostia Antica is not far from the sea, it was breezy and pleasant. And not far away is a modern town -- the name of which eludes me at the moment -- right on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was great to stop there for a bite to eat after Ostia Antica to look at the waves and walk a bit on the boardwalk.
The length of the visit is entirely up to you. The day we visited Ostia we also had plenty of time to see lots of other sites in Rome on the same day. Best I can recall we spent about 3 hours there, and felt like we saw the highlights. Add in roughly an hour for transportation round trip to Piramide station. So I say your time of 5-6 hours is easy enough to do.
I went to Ostia Antica after a visit that morning to one of the major museums in Rome, and I didn't feel rushed at either place. You certainly don't need a whole day for OA unless you're really captivated and/or want to go to the beach too. The beach town, which I didn't visit, is Ostia.
If you leave the hotel by 8 a.m., you should have more than enough time to really explore OA, have a quick lunch on site, and still be back in Rome by 3 p.m. We've done it that way.
Can it be done, yes; it'll be a busy & full day.
Leave for Ostica Antica in the early morning, probably no later than 8am; as if you're going to work. Enjoy the rest of the morning there, eat some lunch, then head back to Rome. You arrive in Rome, go to your accommodations, drop-off some things, maybe change clothes, freshen-up and head back out the door for the food tour.
Thanks everyone! This will work a lot better than my original (twice revised) plan. Glad to hear it’s workable. Appreciate your answers and help!
