I will be arriving in Perugia around 4 or 4:30pm on a Friday depending on my mode of transport (bus or train). I'll be in Perugia for 3 nights, which will leave me with Saturday, Sunday and part of Monday before heading to Siena. While I know I won't be able to see all of the Umbrian towns on my list, I am looking for advice on which of the following towns I can possibly bunch together using buses/trains to make most of my time. Again not looking to hit all the towns (especially with limited travel options on Sunday), just trying to find practical transportation combos of towns: Assisi, Spoleto, Spello, Gubbio, Bevagna, Todi, Montefalco and Trevi. Thanks for all responses.
I can't help you with your trips out of Perugia, we used a car when we went exploring. However, I would urge you not to neglect Perugia itself. I find it fascinating to wander around its medieval streets (some of them covered), explore the underground streets/ruined buildings near Piazza Italia, the Estruscan (including a magnificent city gate) and Roman remains and admire the art and architecture around Piazza 4 Novembre. Have an enjoyable trip, I envy you.
Two near to one another and close by Perugia:
Assisi, an absolutely-do-not-miss Umbrian town, beautiful and filled with sights and Spello a tiny, quiet gem......Enjoy!
I'm confused. So you'll be sleeping in Perugia but you don't want to see Perugia? It sounds as if you want to fill up all your time with day trips to other places. Is that right?
I just didn't understand when you would be seeing Perugia if you were going to be daytripping each day. I guess we just have different travel philosophies. Best wishes on your trip. Umbria is beautiful.
Didn't mean to confuse you Michael. I'm simply trying see which towns would be practical to combine for public transport from Perugia. Towns that are on the same bus route or train route for example where i can see two or three towns in one day. I'm staying in Perugia so i won't need transport to see Perugia. As a Carol mentioned, i could do Assisi and Spello together.
As mentioned, Assisi and Spello can be seen together as they are on the same train line and are very close to one another; also close to Perugia. Spoleto and Trevi are on this same train line as well, but are further south; as they are also close to each other, you can combine them for one day. Or if you elect to see, say, Assisi and Spoleto and not the other two, then you can see these in one lengthy day of sightseeing, as, again, they are on the same rail line (for which I would go to the town furthest away first, then work your way back). Gubbio would likely be done on its own, via bus from Perugia. Bevagna and Montefalco are in very close proximity and are connected by bus so they can be done together via Foligno. As there are only about 4-5 buses/day to/from Foligno to each and also connecting, the bus schedule will likely be setting YOUR schedule as you will be coming from Perugia, so keep this in mind (have to be on time; not much flexibility). Since the bus schedule is somewhat limited, you may have a day where you can see one of those two towns via bus, then catch Spello or something on the way back, since the trains are more flexible: just depends on what you want to do. Todi would likely have to be done on its own; it can be reached by bus, via Deruta I believe, from Perugia, or by train from one of Perugia's secondary stations. So, if you have any interest in ceramics, maybe you can include Deruta with Todi for a day. As you mentioned, on days of limited travel options, which will be Sunday in your case (assuming no holidays come into play), then I would stick to train travel, as there will be more options than buses and you can be more flexible; however, if you are just going to one town, say Gubbio, then buses could still be a possibility even if they are limited. You will likely have the most bus options on weekdays; but, you can just check and confirm any day's schedule.
Thanks again Stuart. And no problem Michael. I'm still working out some kinks and may end up spenidng a fourth night in Perugia.
