Umbrian Quandary

We will be traveling to Umbria on the backside of our traveling through Tuscany. We just have a couple of nights before going back to Rome from Florence. Would it be better to stay one night in Assisi and one night in Orvieto or two nights in Perugia as a base (and go to Assisi during the day and perhaps stop off in Orvieto several hours on the way to Rome for our last night in Italy)? Others have advised that too many hotel changes is problematic, and we don't want to be exhausted by three hotel changes on the last three days. Any other suggetsions? Thanks!

For a more relaxed trip, I'd save Umbria for another trip and spend 2 nights in Orvieto!

If I understand your travel plan, it is Florence - Umbria - Rome. With a car, you can stay anywhere; without a car, connections to and from some towns will take awhile. Orvieto, is lovely, well worth a day or day-and-a-half. We used it as a 2-night relaxation stop between Tuscany where we ran ourselves ragged hiking and taking driving daytrips, and Rome where we spent 5 nights. But Orvieto is not convenient by train to other Umbrian towns. Perugia and Assisi are easily accessible by train to/from one another. If you have a car, you can stay anywhere. Regardless if where Orvieto, Perugia or Assisi I'd say pick one place for two nights, car or not. Ron in Rome has a nice posting about Orvieto, which sold us on going there. See Rick's book, too. We liked hiking the Rupe. http://www.roninrome.com/%20shopping-dining/orvieto-day-trip-from-rome
