umbria w/o car

Want to spend about 5-6 days in Umbria w/o car. Good hill towns with public transportation for getting around. May decide at some future time to rent a car while there for 1-2 days to visit some not serviced by local transportation. Frances

Frances, if your question is seeking suggestions for what town to base yourself out of, I think Assisi is a beautiful place and pretty easy to get to by train.

Frances, We did just this in December, spent 5 nights in Umbria without a car. Chose Spello because I found a charming apartment there. It was about a 20 minute pleasant walk to the train station , although there is a taxi run by Cosimo ( I think that's right!) Which was handy for our initial arrival since uphill with the luggage would have been a challenge. We used Spello as a base to go to Assisi (bus there, train back), Spoleto, and Perugia, as well as a full day wine tour with Gusto Tours. Mark from Gusto took us places we could not have gone alone, or without a car. Spello has some great little restaurants ands is charming and uncommercial. Had hoped to go to Gubbio but by public transportation that was a bit challenging so skipped it this trip. That would be a good option for a car. Hope this helps.

Frances, I've gone to Gubbio several times using the bus. Spello is beautiful, Assisi makes a great base, almost all the hill towns are accessible by bus or train (bus leaves you closer to the town center).

This is a duplicate - or very nearly duplicate - posting. There's another "tuscany / umbria w/o a car" to which OP has responded. Frances, keeping multiple copies of posts confuses the folk helping, and usually confuses the Original Poster.

Personally, I loved Assisi, although I haven't seen Spelloin the itinerary for the next trip! Regarding Gubbio, Zoe, can you tell me which bus lines travels there from Assisi? I've tried to locate this info on line but have been having difficulty. Buon Viaggo to all!
