Umbria - Valnerina/Norcia - worth the trip?

I'm in the process of planning our trip to Umbria/Tuscany for this Summer. One of the maybe's on our itinerary is a trip from Spoletto or Terni through the Valnerina to Norcia and up to Casteluccio via the Piano Grande. We'd be making the drive in the first week of June to catch the wildflowers. Looking for advice on this one. Is it worth the trip? Is that too early or too late? It seems incredibly out of the way. If it makes any difference we're using Montepulciano and either Spello or Todi as our home bases and making day trips from there. Already on the itinerary are Chianti, drives around Montepulciano/Montalcino, Orvieto, San Galgano, Cortona, Pitigliano, Civita, Assisi, Spoletto and Narni.

Hi Marcus,
We enjoyed a week in Umbria Apr. 29 - May 05. There were many fields full of red poppies near Spello, Spoleto, Perugia and Assisi and the autostradas were lined with poppies as well. Lots of other wild flowers around the hilltowns but not as colourful as the poppies. Umbria was beautiful, green and lots of fields of grain, evergreen trees. It felt wilder and more natural than Tuscany. Didnt make it to Tuscany on this trip so cant comment regarding wildflowers at this time of year. The crowds were smaller except in Assisi during the medieval festival. Ciao, Sherry
