My wife and I will be in Perugia for two nights. Arriving by train from Rome and then leaving by train to Bologna. Our first visit to this area; have been to Tuscany several times. How do we best see the area? Sample wine? What transportation? We are both very healthy and love Italy. thanks
Randy
If you don't intend to rent a car, Perugia is the best base to visit Umbria, since it's the Regional capital and the transport hub for Umbria. Using Perugia as a base, besides Perugia, you can visit Assisi, Gubbio, Spello which are all within 45 min. Without a car you won't be able to visit wineries, unless you hire a car (with or without driver). Rental cars are available at the Umbria St. Francis of Assisi Int'l Airport (half way between Perugia and Assisi). However I'm sure there are wine bars in Perugia where you can taste local wines. The main strolling street in Perugia is the Corso Vannucchi. Which goes all the way to the Duomo. Perugia is an international student mecca. One in four residents is a University student. Perugia also hosts the University for Foreigners and boasts one of the highest concentrations of International students in the world. It's a party town with lots of events and activities, except for Summer, when the Universities take a break. Perugia is also where the "Murder of Perugia" occurred, which saw Amanda Knox implicated in one of the most fascinating murder mysteries of this century.
Roberto thanks for the info. I guess we will try and rent a car.
