Umbria Recommendations

We are traveling to Italy in August and will be flying into Venice and spending a couple of days, then taking the train to Chiusi where we'll be staying a week at a villa in the countryside near Fontignano. We have stayed in the same villa twice before and done some day trips by car to places nearby-Perugia, Orvieto, Todi, as well as Montepulciano, Pienze and Montelcino.

I'm curious about other towns in the area that people recommend and why, as we'd like to check out some new places on this trip. We'll have a rental car but ideally would like to keep our destinations within a couple of hours, so Ravenna is on our radar but we're open to other suggestions that fit this plan, ie: vineyards, etruscan ruins, mosaics.

My daughter spent the better part of a summer in San Gemini. She absolutely loved it and recommends this little village to anyone and everyone she knows who wants to visit a town that is less visited and touristy. Having a car is pretty important as there isn’t a train station.

On its outskirts is the Carsulae archaeological site which is pretty impressive. Enjoy your time in Italy!

If, as Nancys8 suggested, you are interested in Piero della Francesca, his Madonna del Parto fresco is in its own small museum in the sweet little town of Monterchi, easily reached by car. The story of the rescue and restoration of the fresco is inspiring and because the artist was a mathematician as well, the artwork is fascinating. We enjoyed a snack in the tiny piazza afterwards.
