Umbria Itinerary - which option?

Hi, I am looking at some options for some time in Italy in late May/ June post-tour of the RS Prague/Budapest tour. I have a reservation for lodging in Spello for the Infiorate in 2026. (Excited!)

I prefer trains for all transportation; I won’t rent a car. The exception for these below are a bus to get up to Cortona and also for Montepulciano. Are there different cities you would recommend?

I LOVE staying in multiple cities! I don’t like day trips so no need to suggest consolidating lodging locations.
I was in Orvieto & Assisi during the RS tour in 2006, but we didn’t stay overnight. I have stayed in Montepulciano, Perugia, and Spello during the Infiorate. (I’ve also stayed in Arezzo.)

If I don’t stay longer in Budapest post-tour, I have another two days to add to Umbria.

Option 1:
Orvieto - 2
Montepulciano - 2
Perugia - 3
Assisi - 2
Spoleto - 2
Spello - 2
Rome

Option 2:
Orvieto - 2
Montepulciano - 2
Cortona - 2
Perugia - 2
Assisi - 2
Spoleto - 1
Spello - 2
Rome

Your Suggestions:. Thank you!
Orvieto
???
Spoleto
Spello - 2
Rome

Have you been to Civita di Bagnoregio? If not, I highly recommend it. I also tend to avoid day trips, but we did it on a day trip by bus. We really liked it. There did seem to be some people overnighting there. If you haven't been and would like to, then I'd recommend 3 nights in Orvieto.

In Tuscany, I've only been to Sienna and Florence, so I can't help much with Tuscany cities. Some of your cities are Tuscan. Maybe change your title??

Jean, my daughter was fortunate enough to spend time studying conservation at a school based in San Gemini. She adored it. It would be a very quiet little town, just a place to soak it all in, but it does have the Roman ruins of Carsulae very near. Kind of an outside the box suggestion. She’s dying to go back, she loved the people there so much. Sounds like an incredible trip whatever you decide!

Hi Jules M, Civita di Bagnoregio looks very interesting except that awful high open walkway up to the city has always stopped me - LOL!

I titled it “Umbria” to help focus the regional answers. Yes, Cortona is near the border, and Montepulciano is west of Umbria. ; ). I’ve been to Siena & Florence multiple times, plus a handful of other Tuscany cities. It’s a very nice area, too..

Budapest works out best if you have a minumum of 3 full days; and to be honest you could stay 5 and still not see everything. That means other than arrival and departure day. This post sort of lays out what you can do in 3 days and what you will miss with just 3 days: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/hungary/budapest-vienna-krakow
