Would like to know if it is possible to take a day trip we arrive in airport 8.30 and depart at 16.20 so would need to be back by 14.20 is this an option or is this an ambitious schedule, we do not wish to go into Rome, any other areas that can be suggested for a short tour would be greatly appreciated. We are happy to hire a driver and car or any train journeys would be considered just don't fancy spending the day in airport before our flight home.

If "home" is the US or Canada, I think your airline will suggest checking in at least 3 hours in advance.
Ostia Antica is very close to Fiumicino. Rome2Rio.com estimates the driving time at 15 minutes, so a taxi would not be exorbitant. I don't know of other likely tourist destinations you can reach without going through Rome, and you don't have a great deal of time.

Lazio.
Ostia Antica
Hadrian's Villa and Tivoli
Umbria.
I love the Roman ruins of Carsulae. Your very own ruins with hardly, if any, tourists around. You have it all to yourself.
Spoleto, Montefalco, Assissi, Orvieto are all with easy reach if you have a car, and a driver just makes it that much easier.

Will your luggage be checked through? I would only visit very near the airport, like maybe Ostia Antica, or Viterbo. Tivoli is on the other side of the city and there is too much risk of traffic making you late for 14:20 check-in. Personally, I would not do this. It's too much travel for too little sightseeing.
At least you can go into Rome on the train, not subject to surface traffic.

We drove from FCO to Spello, Umbria last year and it was more than two hours. I wouldn't risk it.
There are lots of good suggestions in the posts above.
Day trips outside of Rome as well, Castelgondolfo, the Pope's Summer Residence on a lake is another one. We had a nice lunch in a waterfeont restaurant there. As mentioned above, Ostia Antica is next to the airport.
