Umbria Cheese/farm tour?

We are headed to Umbria after Rome in mid-April, basing in Perugia for 5 nights. One thing I'd like to consider is some type of cheese/farm tour. In googling, I saw a place called Chiacchiarni Farm in Montefalco which sounds exactly like what I'm looking for (pecorino and olive oil tasting, food foraging, truffle hunting, cooking and eating with the family) but all the TripAdvisor reviews were ancient and I couldn't locate a website.

I know we could probably head to Pienza in Tuscany but I've actually been there in the past and am looking to explore Umbria. We haven't yet finalized our days there so if you have favorite unique experiences or restaurants, send them my way please :)

Do you need a tour in English or do you just want to visit to watch production?

That's a good question. I love the idea of an authentic versus "canned" experience but would probably benefit from someone with some English!

Will you have a car, because without one, I think your options might be limited to taking a "cheese tour."

With a car, I imagine your options would be great---it's not difficult to either e-mail them or ask your hotel to phone them and just ask if you can pass by at the time they are in production (usually mornings)....my guess is the someone around will speak at the very least, minimal English.

All set. My Airbnb host in Perugia was ever so helpful. I'm sharing her suggestions here for others!

Mazzatosta Dairy

Via Sala, 35, 06084 Bettona, Perugia, Italy

Small artisanal dairy
. Visits possible during production (by reservation)
Also suitable for solo travelers
• Traditional production of Umbrian pecorino cheese and dairy products.
• If you book in the morning, you can see the cheese being made and aged.
• English available if requested in advance (family-run).

Here, the experience is more “authentic” and less touristy.

2) Fontemanna Dairy
Panicale (Lake Trasimeno) — very scenic. 35 min

Via Cristoforo Colombo 30, Colle
• San Paolo, 06068 Panicale, Perugia, Italy

Also perfect for solo travelers.
Tasting + explanation of the production process
Highly appreciated by foreign visitors

A small workshop where you can fully understand the stages of pecorino production.

3) La Redola Verde Farm
Near Montefalco / Spoleto

Tabarrini Marco Winery
Via Str. Seconda, 27/B
Turrita Hamlet

• Farm with livestock and dairy production.
• Farm tours with an explanation of the production cycle.
• Opportunity to see animals, milk processing, and tasting.
• Great for small groups or private tours.

Strength: family atmosphere → they can often arrange a tour in English if requested in advance.

When writing for all audiences, use this phrase:

“We are individual visitors and would like an English cheese-making tour during production hours.”

Superb! So you can set up the visit beforehand, instead of just dropping by..,sounds great!!!

You know you can bring back cheese to the US, right?

Tell me more about that! I once tried to bring back these gorgeous dried salamis from France and the customs person made me toss them. I think the rule is that foods have to be sealed properly. Is that right?
