Umbria - Assisi or Spoleto

Hi All,

We have a 9 night trip planned for September.
We were originally going to do 3 nights in Orvieto, 2 nights in Spoleto, and finish off with 4 nights in Rome.
We will not be renting a car - no exceptions. This original itinerary has the benefits of short train rides, which sounds most relaxing.
We have been to Orvieto And Rome before. Orvieto was a one night stop 2 years ago and we decided we wanted to go back someday because it was too beautiful!

I am starting to second guess my original itinerary since I have always thought Assisi was gorgeous in photos.

1) Is it worth doing Orvieto 2 nights, Assisi 2 nights, & squeeze 1 Night for Spoleto before heading back to Rome?We do not get to Orvieto until 8 PM the first day that makes me uneasy about cutting out that 3rd night in Orvieto.
2)What about 3 Nights Orvieto and 2 Nights Assisi instead of Spoleto? maybe a lil side trip to Spello when we head towards Rome?
3) Is keeping our original itinerary going to be amazing enough that I will not regret seeing Assisi????

Is it worth cutting out Spoleto all together in favor for Assisi.
Would love some advice from someone who has been to all three if you are out there!!!
advice please.

Thanks.

If you have been to Rome and Orvieto before, cut those short and devote more time to the others. I think Assisi deserves some more time and from there you could visit Gubbio and Spello as well.

Spoleto is a great town, lots to see. Assisi is nice also. Those two sound like the two you should concentrate on and see if they compare to Orvieto, which you have already visited, in your mind. Maybe you will find a new favorite. I have been to all three and I can't pick a favorite, they are all quintessential Italian towns that are worthy of a visit. I try not to go back to a town I have seen as there are so many other options available.

Been to both places. if I had to choose I'd say Assisi. Dramatic scenery and history. I went to Spoleto thinking it was a way station on the way to visit the monks in Norcia, but found Spoleto to be a "bella sorpresa". Could be a little tough on those who can't walk up steep hills, but I liked it.

If you do decide to go to Assisi, consider taking a cooking class with Letizia at Alla Madonna del Piatto cooking school. It was so much fun and we ate each course that we prepared on her terrace overlooking the beautiful rolling hills of Assisi. She is just so charming. A lovely way to experience both Italian culture, people and delicious food.

Hi Everyone. Thank you for your responses and thoughts!
It looks like 2 nights in Orvieto, 2 nights in Spello, and 1 Night in Spoleto fits the advice I am getting from all of you.
We are flying over from California and not going to get to Orvieto until 8 PM so I cannot cut it any shorter than two nights.
We will consider cutting down 4 nights in Rome to 3 in order to add a night to Umbria but we really liked Rome last time we were there and it is nice to stay in one spot longer before flying back home.

Assisi is only a half hour more or less from Spoleto by train.

Personally I'd opt for Assisi to stay in and visit Spoleto and Spello. We spent 3 nights in Assisi and loved the town. Also visited Spoleto and Spello. Orvieto is one of our favorites and we choose to return whenever possible.

Hi all,

We ended up deciding on 2 nights in Orvieto, 2 nights in Assisi, and 1 night in Spoleto before ending our trip in Rome (for 4 nights). We leave later this week. Super excited! Thanks all.
