Umbria Agriturismo + Cheese (bonus points for goats)

Hey there! I'm heading to Italy in July '23 and would love to peel my family away from the big city sites for a little chill time in the country. I'm looking at about 5-7 days between Florence and Rome. Since the point is to get away from the crowds, I'm feeling less like Tuscany is what I want and am considering Umbria. I love the idea of exploring the green heart of Italy and the beautiful hill towns while still actually getting a taste of Italy and not an Italian theme park. That said, here are the things I have to contend with:

  • My family is two younger teens and two parents.
  • It will be hot, we really want a pool and AC if possible.
  • One teen hates mushrooms, the other olives (ugh, I know.)
  • My wife is lactose intolerant but LOVES cheese and so gravitates toward goat and sheep cheeses that are easier to digest.
  • Did I mention we love cheese?
  • I'm a little concerned about a heavy, meat and game diet. Sliced meats don't get the same reactions, but wild boar at dinner wouldn't be well received.
  • One of the people in my party has a thing for goats. Like if there is a goat nearby we will need to go and meet it. If it makes cheese we may move in. Did I mention we like cheese? lol

TL/DR: Help me find a central Italy farm stay with a pool, AC, room for 4, and access to cheese and lighter regional fare.

Look at Spello, Bevagna, and Montefalco, Umbrian towns, charming.

Can't help you finding an agriturismo (we prefer apartments in a town), avoiding crowds (we usually travel to Italy in the fall and winter), or locating a goat. But I can put your mind at rest about some of your food concerns. I hate both mushrooms and olives, and rarely eat meat, and I was absolutely happy eating in Umbria for a month. All sorts of menu choices, especially if you stick to the antipasti and primi items on the menu (this also pretty much ensures that a meal will not be "heavy"). Look up the menus online whenever you can --- my husband does this for me just so we don't get stuck in a very meat-oriented restaurant (and there are those).

sounds like you could use a good travel agent, search for one.

also look for appropriate TV episodes from Stanley Tucci and Alex Polizzi (the latter on Youtube).
