Umbria

Staying in Montefalco in Umbria and will do afternoon trips to surrounding towns. What is best transportation? Bus or renting a car? Even the smaller train routes look like they do not go to these towns. Thanks!

Umbria and Tuscany are best with a rental car. So many great towns are off the train routes, and travel is just so much more efficient with wheels.

Roads are often crooked, but they're well paved and easily traveled. On our trip 2 years ago, I didn't even have any road maps and had no problems navigating by road signs. I'd take some directions off Mapquest and ramble from town to town.

Many turn their Hertz cars in at the Orvieto train station when going to Rome, and they'll take the 70 minute train ride into Rome Termini.

Hello, Zoe. Renting a car would be the most efficient, but buses connect most towns (although to my knowledge Montefalco is not a transportation hub). What towns are you interested in visiting?
