Uffizi Free entry

I have seen in the website that you get free entry to the Uffizi on the 1st sunday of each month. Are the lines usually then crazy long and hence you spend hours waiting? Or is it better to pay the money and go on a different day?

Pay and go on a different day, even book in advance to save queing at all.

Yes, the lines on a free Sunday are crazy long. I once saw them go around the entire loggia and out into the Piazza della Signora. Even when the lines are "shorter" later in the day, your wait to get in will be well over an hour. Go on a day when you can reserve an entry time.

The free Sunday is a good day to visit other free sites such as Pitti Palace, which is so large it can absorb the crowrds. I've also twice had good luck getting quickly into the Accademia late in the afternoon, but it's hit or miss. If Museum of San Marco is open (often closed on 1st Sunday), that's another good option.
