In the latest Italy book, Steve says I will get a 6-digit confirmation number for the Uffizi and Academia. I only got a 5 for each place. Is this acceptable?
When I was there 2 years ago, it was a 6 digit code; but apparently others recently are also getting 5 digit codes (this question was asked by someone a few days ago). I have not seen that this is confirmed as being the new way of things, tho. Hopefully someone who's been there recently can confirm that!
I've got tickets for the Uffuzi for next month and it's a 5 digit confirmation code. I've used this vendor before for tickets to the Uffizi so it must be some new system. Remember you have to redeem your voucher for actual tickets before getting in the "reservations only" line at entrance #1. Reserved ticket vouchers are redeemed at a different place from the regular ticket purchase window. Last time it was opposite the entrance across the narrow plaza. Now I think it's at entrance #3. There will be two "reserved entrance" lines. One is for larger groups and one is for singles, couples, families. Clearly posted (well, it was anyway). Allow yourself a 1/2 hour prior to your ticketed entrance time. When you see the general admittance line a half hour/45 minutes even will seems wonderfully short.
Which line do we get in if we don't have a voucher - only a number - because we called the Academia and Uffizi as recommended by Rick Steves?
I was given 5-digit codes, also. They didn't want any money and wouldn't take any personal information other than my name, number of persons, and time of visit. This really seems sketchy to me since there is no mechanism of accountability. If they at least took my CC number to reserve then I'd feel safe knowing that they then had a minimal contract to honor. Of course, they don't want to offend tourists either and so I'm sure my reservation will be there when I arrive...right?;)
When I was there, I had my B&B make the reservations for me. I don't know what info she gave to each place, but all I had in my hand when I walked up to the advanced reservation line was my confirmation code. I honestly don't remember if they had my name on file, or if I just gave them our code. If I were you, I'd just go to the reserved line and had them your code; if you're in the wrong place, they'll tell you where to go. Be sure to arrive 15 - 30 minutes early.
I made my res. by phone from home, got a lovely English speaking operator; got my code, and when I arrived: there I was on their list. So don't worry, the system has been going for years and it's fine.
The other good thing is that if you can't make it for some reason, you haven't lost a thing.
