Check and see.
It is available in selected cities, but not in the way it exists elsewhere. Courts have ruled in 2015 that this type of car sharing service provided by drivers who are unlicensed ordinary people is illegal. In some cities Uber does operate Uber Black, which is a black limo service operated by licensed limo drivers with cars which are authorized to be used for that service. So basically if you use Uber Black, a car (generally a luxury car) driven by a licensed limo driver will come to you. The price is comparable to any limo service, and generally more expensive than a regular taxi.
Ok thanks everyone. I suspected as much. Was in Germany in 2019 and Ubers were often difficult to get and didn’t seem to utilize GPS for being able to pick you up. You had to walk a block or two to their pick up location.
My wife and I stayed at an Airbnb in Rome last September and a host made a very useful recommendation. You can instal and use the Free Now app on your phone. It calls taxis but functions almost exactly as Uber does. I am not sure if it works outside of Rome, as that was the last place we stayed before returning home. But it at least works great there. Good luck.
I tried twice when we were there in March. Once it said it was coming then didn’t show and eventually updated to “no Uber is available right now”. The second time, it said unavailable in the first place.
