Uber-ing in Italy (Milan)

No. Uber is not in Italy, at least not with the type of service you might be used in North America or elsewhere.

An Italian court decision in 2015, on a case taken to court by the taxi association, sentenced that type of paid service can only be rendered by licensed taxi/limo drivers.

As a result Uber is present in Italy only with Uber Black, a black limo service provided by regularly licensed black limo drivers on a luxury car. So it's basically a limo service, which in all cases will be as expensive as any limo service and more expensive than a regular taxi.

You can upload the taxi apps that are most common in Italy (see below) or also call. Hailing taxis driving by is not a common practice in Italy, therefore don't even try or you'll be there for hours and nobody will stop.

You can use an app like Free Now. It books an available taxi and they pick you up. I have not used them, but I assume due to fare pricing is costs a bit more than going to a taxi rank.
