When asked for an ID at a museum or other sight, such as the Vatican, does it need to be your passport or is a driver's license sufficient? Are other types of ID acceptable? Thanks for all the help, I am heading to Italy next month and have learned lots of valuable information from this helpline.
It can vary but a Drivers license is nearly always accepted, sometimes a photo copy of your passport works as well.
We were able to leave our US driver license for an ID for the deposit of audio guide rentals. We were never asked for ID for anything else besides audio guide rentals.
I took along an expired driver's license, at the suggestion of my Italian teacher. It worked fine. She said you should never trust them with your passport.
I agree with Micheal. I would never leave my passport for an audio guide. The Vatican takes DL's.
