Type of Jacket - Italy in Dec.

Hello, I am going to be in Italy for 10 days in December. I wondering what type of women's coat would be the best? I hope this doesn't seem like a silly question, but I live in Florida and have never bought a nice winter coat. I want to get something nice, as I am planning future winter trips to NY, Colorado, probably Europe again, etc. I know opinions will be varied, and I appreciate all of your help. Links would be great too, if you know of a place the coat is sold online.

I've lived in the south and currently in the north. When I visited Rome one Christmas holiday I took my London Fog type raincoat with a zip out wool lining. Then I packed my gloves, a hat and a shawl large enough to go over my coat in case my layers underneath didn't keep me warm enough. It worked great. My raincoat with and without liner has been my constant companion on most of my trips to Europe/

Ditto what Laurie said! Last December I wore a long microfiber raincoat and didn;t even use the liner. But then I am from Portland, OR, so used to cooler temps. Ass gloves, a scarf, and gortex shoes, and I was happy throughout Italy in Dec.

@ Laurel, can I ask where you found your Ass gloves? I've been looking all over for some. ;-)
